Health systems are increasingly judged not only by what they achieve clinically but by how patients experience the care they receive. For much of the twentieth century, the quality of healthcare was defined largely in technical terms: correct diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and survival. Over the past three decades, however, a broader understanding has emerged. The landmark report of the Institute of Medicine (2001), Crossing the Quality Chasm, established patient-centredness as one of six core dimensions of quality, alongside safety, effectiveness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. Since then, patient experience has moved from the margins of healthcare management to its centre, and it is now routinely measured, publicly reported, and linked to accreditation, funding, and institutional reputation.
